Super Fruit South Africa was created to produce super fruit in a sustainable manner. The company focused on growing cacti to produce over forty commercial dragon fruit varieties and ten commercial cactus pear varieties. This gives our customers an endless choice of different colours and taste profiles, as well as a range of health benefits.

Cacti are known for their water-efficient production cycle, and cactus farming has a positive impact on the environment. It is a low-maintenance plant that requires only a small amount of water and fertiliser.

We produce a diverse range of dragon fruit, showcasing striking skin colours from yellow and green to deep red and maroon. The flesh varies just as beautifully, ranging from white and soft pink to rich red and deep purple. Our cactus pears are equally vibrant, with skins in shades of green, yellow, and red, and flesh that spans green, yellow, pink, and red hues.

All of our fruit contains naturally edible seeds that are rich in beneficial oils and antioxidants. The flavour profile of dragon fruit is complex, offering a balance from sweet to tart with refreshing notes of berry, kiwi, and coconut.

History

Super Fruit SA produces fruit on a farm called Bovenplaat, next to the small town of Velddrif. The farm has been in the same family for generations and has a rich history.

With climate change and water shortages in the Western Cape, we looked at alternative crops to keep our farming business sustainable in the long term. For years, our predecessors grew prickly pear cactus that produced fruit and animal feed during drought years. These low-maintenance plants survived for many years on the farm.

This gave us the idea of farming with cacti on the West Coast, with its sandy soils and hot summer sun. We bought ten of the sweetest variations of spineless cactus pear and over forty varieties of dragon fruit. These were selected not only for their sweetness but also for their antioxidants and nutritional value, giving them a wide range of health benefits.

We selected only the best-adapted varieties for our climate and soil type so that we can farm with nature and deliver the tastiest fruits available on the market. Our fruit is picked at exactly the right time so that the flavour of each fruit is fully developed, giving every customer the best eating experience of their favourite cactus fruit varieties.
